Know Your Rights: New Flight Refund Rules
With the holidays coming up, travel plans can get messy. The good news? You now have stronger protections when flights are delayed or canceled.
Under the Automatic Refund Rule, airlines must give you a cash refund (not just a voucher) if your flight is canceled or significantly delayed and you choose not to rebook.
You’re entitled to a refund when:
Your flight is delayed 3+ hours (domestic) or 6+ hours (international)
You lose a paid seat, bag, or service like Wi-Fi
The airline makes a major schedule or airport change
Refunds are issued to your original payment method within 7 business days if paid by credit card. Mechanical or crew issues qualify, but weather delays don’t.
Always keep your emails, receipts, and screenshots just in case you need to follow up or file a complaint with the DOT.

Traveling Tips
Book early, but smart. Set alerts from Google Flights or Hopper to track dips before you buy.
Avoid the crowds. Mid-week flights are usually less crowded and cheaper than weekend flights.
Download the airline’s app. It’s the fastest way to rebook or track refunds if your flight changes unexpectedly.
Pack like a pro. Keep essentials, medications, and one outfit in your carry-on just in case your checked bag takes the scenic route.
Charge before you board. Airport outlets are always full; bring a portable charger so you don’t have to hunt for power between gates.
